Semere’s Work Placement

Semere is a service user of Workplace Leeds (a Leeds Mind service) who recently took on a 6-week paid work placement hosted by Eversheds Sutherland. The opportunity supported by the Credit Control Team in the Finance Department. In an interview carried out by the Support Specialist, Semere shares his experiences of working with a Mindful Employer and the positive impact it has had on his mental health and wellbeing…

Q. How did you feel about your placement with Eversheds Sutherland?

Mark Wells, Employment Support Specialist at Workplace Leeds

I had an initial meeting with Eversheds before my placement, Employment Support Specialist Mark Wells from Workplace Leeds came with me. I met with HR and the Manager from the Credit Control Team.

This was very helpful because the size of the building and organisation did feel a little overwhelming at first.

I was put at ease by the team, Catherine from HR and the team leader from the Credit control department and it was obvious to me that from that initial meeting they wanted me to be part of the team.

Q. What support did you receive from Eversheds Sutherland?

I was given excellent support, on my first day I was enrolled of the new starters induction which helped me to feel part of the team. I was visited by Catherine who stated should I have any issues or problems then not to hesitate to ask her.

I felt supported by my line manager, the role and tasks that I undertook were explained well which enabled me to undertake the role in a confident manner.

The people in the team were also very welcoming which was very nice. If I had a question they were always happy to help me and it was never too much trouble.

“I now know that I am ready for work, this placement has made me realise this.”

Q. How did this help you?

I really enjoyed working at Eversheds Sutherland, I enjoyed the work very much. It has helped me to become more confident, I also have made my mind up that I would like to work for an organisation like Eversheds Sutherland.

I thought that people would not be as nice as they were in such a large organisation before my placement. I now know that I was wrong and I feel able to make an application to work at similar companies. I now know that I am ready for work, this placement has made me realise

Q. What impact has this had on your mental health and wellbeing?

I feel good about myself and I am positive about my future. I am enjoying my studies in accountancy, I want to now get a role where I can use the skills that I have learned.

The placement has been great, I only wish that it could have been for a longer time. I will miss the people there as they were very nice and I enjoyed working with them.

Q. What two things will you take away from this placement experience?

How kind and helpful all the people were at Eversheds Sutherland. I was not judged and really felt part of the team.
