December Networking Event 2015

December’s Network meeting was all about how people talk about their mental health and how we can have more conversations in the workplace. Kindly hosted by DAC Beachcroft we watched the Manup? film created by Time to Change and Leeds and York Partnership Foundation Trust to showcase men’s real lived experience of mental health. You can watch the documentary here:

Manup? have kindly said that all Mindful Employer members can use the documentary in staff awareness or training sessions – please use the Youtube link or email mindfulemployer@leedsmind.org.uk if you’d like to receive a high-resolution DVD copy.

We also heard from Anjali Sharma, an employment lawyer at DAC Beachcroft, of the best ways to keep in contact with staff during their absence for mental health reasons.

Leeds Mind’s very own Rosana Rategh delivered an interactive workshop where participants were encouraged to spot the signs and symptoms of mental ill health in the workplace and discuss how best to start a conversation with a colleague they were concerned about. The festive season it can be a difficult time for a number of reasons, please pass the following information onto your staff.

Look after your mental health this Christmas

Coping with a mental health problem can be difficult at any time of year but at Christmas there are extra demands that can leave you feeling worse than usual. You may struggle because of stress, the added financial burden, or pressure to join in when everyone around you seems to be having fun. If you’re unable to be with loved ones this Christmas, you may worry about feeling lonely.

It may be difficult but it’s important to talk about how you’re feeling especially if you are having a difficult time. Try talking to a friend, someone from your family, or a colleague from work.

If you want to talk to someone in confidence, you can ring the Samaritans free of charge on 116 123 (open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year). You can also e-mail jo@samaritans.org.

If you feel in distress and need help, call the Leeds Connect helpline on 0808 800 1212. It is open every night of the year from 6.30pm to 10.30pm. Helpline volunteers will provide emotional support and information.
